SEMARANG – The modern world of hospitality now requires a strong blend of global communication and hands-on operational skills. To answer this call, students of the Applied Foreign Languages Study Program at UNDIP’s Vocational School recently completed a two-day intensive training in housekeeping, held on May 18 and 19, 2026, at Novotel Semarang.
Guided by Mr. I Made, a seasoned professional and housekeeping expert from Novotel Semarang, the workshop was tailor-made to connect their English language studies with practical hospitality. Ultimately, it serves as a meaningful stepping stone for students before they step into the professional world.

To ensure effective learning and maximize every student’s hands-on experience, participants were divided into small groups. This approach allowed for deeper, more meaningful interactions between the professionals and the students. During the sessions, the experts gave live, detailed demonstrations of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for making a bed.
Each group had the opportunity to closely observe professional techniques, from stripping and laying linen to creating precise 45-degree mitered corners. They also learned how to arrange duvets and pillows efficiently while maintaining a neat, aesthetic look. This training beautifully married the practical aspects of housekeeping with the language competencies that define the Applied Foreign Languages study program.
Beyond bed-making, these small-group sessions guided students through Room Cleaning Standards—covering top-to-bottom cleaning methods, bathroom sanitization, and meticulous dusting. They also gained insights into workflow management, learning the choreography and coordination required between room attendants, public area attendants, and the laundry department.
The Secretary of the Applied Foreign Languages Study Program explained that this intensive training on May 18–19 carries a vital strategic goal. It is designed to equip students before they embark on their internships next semester. By observing and practicing hotel operations firsthand, students are expected to gain a complete picture of the industry and cultivate a work-ready mindset from day one of their internships.

This accelerated step is driven by a proven track record. Based on previous years, graduates and students of the Applied Foreign Languages program possess high competitiveness in the global market. Many alumni have successfully secured international internship opportunities within the hospitality and tourism sectors, spanning from Malaysia to Japan.
Through this wonderful collaboration between campus academics and industry professionals—such as Mr. I Made from Novotel Semarang—this year’s students are expected to maintain, or even elevate, these achievements. The combination of fluent foreign language mastery and solid vocational housekeeping skills will undoubtedly be their ultimate asset to shine on the global tourism stage.
