Students from the Applied Foreign Languages Study Program, Vocational School of Universitas Diponegoro, held a community service initiative titled “Waste to Praise: Turning Waste into Masterpieces, Transforming Mindsets into Empowerment” at the Manarul Mabrur Orphanage in Semarang. This activity was aimed at the orphanage children in an effort to raise awareness and foster care regarding the importance of environmental preservation from an early age.

This activity serves as a concrete contribution by the students to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in the aspects of Quality Education and Responsible Consumption and Production. The education was delivered through interactive and engaging methods, encouraging habits of waste reduction and utilization.
During the event, the children were educated on the importance of environmental cleanliness and learned to identify various types of waste, including how to sort organic, inorganic, residual, and hazardous (B3) waste. They also gained an understanding of the benefits of proper waste management. In addition to the theoretical lessons, the participants took part in a creative hands-on session where they transformed used materials into valuable and aesthetically pleasing crafts.
Through the theme “Waste to Praise: Turning Waste into Masterpieces, Transforming Mindsets into Empowerment” the students hope that the children will not only understand the importance of environmental preservation but also develop a more caring, creative, and responsible mindset toward their surroundings. The event was met with great enthusiasm. The children of Manarul Mabrur Orphanage actively participated in every session, from the presentations and interactive discussions to the practical craft-making activity. This educational yet fun atmosphere is expected to instill positive habits that they can apply in their daily lives.
Through this initiative, it is hoped that the children of Manarul Mabrur Orphanage will become increasingly aware of the importance of protecting the environment and capable of implementing good waste management practices. This program also stands as a clear testament to the synergy between academia and the community in supporting sustainable development through early education, ultimately paving the way for a greener and more sustainable environment.
